Vol 1. No 4. January, 1998 LesbofileJennifer BlissIt's hard to pin Thai lesbians down. They seem to just go wherever the wind blows, and not always to gay venues. The flavour of the month seems to be hops, and of the German variety. Big groups of tom and dee gals have been spotted downing steins of lager at the spacious new Paulaner Brauhaus on Sukhumvit 24. Maybe that's why Utopia's Ladies' Night on Fridays is so empty these days. Bangkok loses it's only dedicated lesbian night when Utopia pub closes its doors for the last time on Dec 31. After three years as the city's de facto gay and lesbian centre, owner John Goss cites financial reasons for the closure. The ground-floor bookshop and cafe will continue operating. Sentimental lesbo favourite, Kitchenette cafe, however, is still packing them in on weekend nights late. Hidden away on the first floor of the Dutchess Plaza at 289 Sukhumvit Soi 55 (Thonglor), this snug venue offers a singer/guitarist to serenade you while you make merry. Lesbian heartthrob Ellen DeGeneres turned up to the Human Rights Campaign Dinner in Washington recently hand in hand with girlfriend Ann Heche. The couple wore matching white suits, signalling loud and clear that they are still very much an item and quashing rumours that Ann had left Ellen for a man. Ellen, who made TV history last year by coming out on her top-rating sitcom, received a civil rights award at the annual dinner where President Bill Clinton was guest speaker. Ellen was named last month as one of Ms Foundation's
top 10 role models for young women for her In fact, Ms DeGeneres has been in the news so much lately, that some people are sick of seeing her face. She topped the Boring Institute's annual list of the 10 most-boring personalities. The British royal family were voted second, while Paula Jones, the Arkansas state employee who has accused President Clinton of forcing her to engage in a sexual act, was third. Heche and DeGeneres, meanwhile, have moved in together. It happened after only three weeks apparently. Hmmm . . . And Heche says she's never been a lesbian before. A final word on the Lesbian Nation's reigning couple of the moment.Heche set tongues wagging in Hollywood last month with news that not only has she been cast as Bill Pullman's pregnant wife in the new film A Simple Plan, but that she plans to have a baby in real life too. The 27-year-old actress is keeping mum about the practical details and whether or not she and Ellen have already lined up a man to be the baby's father. Looking for a new lesbian-friendly CD? Check out Lesbian Favourites: Women Like Us (Rhino), the first contemporary pop album produced by and for dykes. Among the 18 artists and songs on this compilation are Sandra Bernhard turning the tables on '50 Ways to Leave Your Lover', k.d. lang's 'Just Keep Me Moving', Janis Ian's 'Ride Me Like a Wave' and Jill Sobule's 'I Kissed a Girl'. But don't assume that just because an artist is featured here that she's a lesbo. According to producer Andrea Kinloch: "Frankly, I'm not sure who is and who is not." Rock goddess Melissa Etheridge starts filming next month for A Piece of My Heart, in which she plays the legendary singer Janis Joplin. The screenplay was written by Melissa's partner, Julie Cypher, and Brad Pitt looks set to take the role of Kris Krisofferson, Janis' one-time lover. Did you see the recent issue of the Thai-language magazine Elle with the four naked farang women on the cover? Way to go, Elle! Don't be surprised if there's a huge influx of new
converts rushing to lesbo-friendly hang-outs near you. |
