Vol 1. No 4. January, 1998

Tower of Babel by Whirlybird

Welcome to 1998! Thanks to our deadline, you'll have to wait until next month for any tales of perfidy I undercovered during my prowls to celebrate the New Year. So, in the meantime, let's get the last of 1997's old news out of the way.

After taking my chopper in for a recent turn-on, er, I mean, tune-up and lube job, I took her out for a whirl over the City of Angels and ended up in... Heaven. No, not quite the one mentioned so frequently in that musty old tome The Bible - the new one in the Warner Tower on Soi Mahesak between Silom and Surawong roads.

My initial reaction was disappointment. I was hoping to encounter a large population of "angels", but it seems the sauna is still waiting for them to alight. (Perhaps they're still slumming it at their old habitat, Angelos). Of course, I did stop by on a Monday and the barkeep assured me that Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays saw a little more heavenly action.

The fly-by wasn't a total loss, however, thanks to a quirk in design. Located on two floors, Heaven is nicely done in a Spartan sort of way. The first floor (located on the fourth floor) sports a luxuriously appointed weight room, a California-style cafe and lockers. Up a spiral staircase you'll find two saunas (a wet and dry), a porn vid corner, modern but not-so-private showers, about 20 to 30 rooms for sharing nectar and a dark room (mini-maze) that seems like something of an afterthought.

One of the rooms off the porn corner is a room with a view - it has a smoked glass window that is easily mistaken for a mirror. Thank God for that, because it provided about the only excitement going. I saw a rather flabby farang leading a handsome Thai stud into the room. You can guess how it ended.

Open daily from 3pm to 1am, Heaven's toll is Baht 160.

CAT is another sauna that recently opened its doors.Open from 3 'til midnight, the place has an inviting little cafe (and we mean LITTLE), a rather cool steam sauna and not much more. Suffering from the same monetary malaise as the rest of us, CAT's owner has a dry sauna planned - construction is nearly complete. There are boys available for massage.

In mid-month, Dec 13 to be exact, we swooped in on Utopia to help celebrate its third anniversary party. The event was well attended but it seemed to have more the air of a wake since owner John Goss plans to close the pub in January. Again, it's that damned economy. But that didn't stop John from feting everyone with free whiskey and cokes, beer, soft drinks and food.

Following up on our Lothario of last month, I ran into Ronnie and he added a few details he hadn't previously mentioned. It turns out the final straw that drove him out was the huge dildo that our Romeo pulled out of hiding. And regarding the story about the cola that lost its fizz, turns out the pair haven't split up, they've just moved into separate but adjoining houses. Go figure.
